Leeds Contemporary Singers have won the first heat of BBC One’s new singing competition Pitch Battle.
The soul group of musicians came out on top of the six groups in tonight’s first show, winning themselves a spot in the live final where the winners will win £50,000.
Hosted by Mel Giedroyc, six choirs and vocal groups of all different sizes and musical genres battle it out for a place in the Grand Final over five hears.
To progress the groups must impress the panel of musical judges – the nation’s favourite choirmaster Gareth Malone, former choirgirl turned international recording artist Kelis and for this week, superstar guest judge BRIT Award winner and former choirboy Will Young.
Pitch Battle – Will Young
In the first round, two groups went head to head by first performing on their own and then competing in a themed riff.
Here’s how those results panned out tonight:
LMA Choir: Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars v The Uptone Girls: Changing by Sigma ft Paloma Faith
Riff-off theme: Angels
Winner: LMA Choir
Leeds Contemporary Singers: Runnin’ by Beyonce v Vocally Bespoke: Hold Back The River by James Bay
Riff-off theme: Sorry
Winner: Leeds Contemporary Singers
Vocal Dimension Chorus: Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics v A Flame: Unconditionally by Katy Perry
Riff-off theme: Love Yourself
Winner: A Flame
The three winning groups – LMA Choir, Leeds Contemporary Singers and A Flame – then each performed in the solo battles, with one singer from each group taking the lead on a song.
The judges then eliminated A Flame, leaving LMA Choir and Leeds Contemporary Singers to progress to the final battle.
Here they shared the same song – Evergreen – before this week’s guest judge Will Young joined in with the group the judges have chosen to go through to the Grand Final.
That group was Leeds Contemporary Singers, who are now into the live final at the end of the series.
Will Young will return in the Grand Final to sing with the show’s winning group who will be one step closer to the £50,000 cash prize.
Pitch Battle continues next Saturday night with the second heat featuring six brand new groups.
